Insider guide
Shopping La Jolla.
The story
La Jolla's shopping sits in the walkable village above La Jolla Cove, on Girard Ave (the 7400 to 7900 blocks) and Prospect St, with Herschel Ave, Ivanhoe Ave, Wall St and Silverado St in between. The mix is long-running independent women's boutiques and menswear, watch dealers, photography galleries, activewear and surf brands, and Warwick's bookstore. The loop locals use starts on Prospect St, cuts through Ivanhoe and Herschel Ave, and finishes on Girard Ave's block of boutiques.
Girard Avenue
Most shops are on Girard Ave. Warwick's (7812) has been family-owned since 1896, in La Jolla since 1939 and on Girard since 1952, with a large stationery, pen, art-supply and gift section and author signings and talks most weeks, so check its events calendar before you go. The Ascot Shop (7750), family-owned and open since 1950, carries Eton, Paige, AG and Johnnie-O alongside tailored clothing, with custom suits and on-site tailoring.
For women's clothing, Sigi's Boutique (7888), founded in 1968, carries European and American designer lines with jewelry, accessories and gifts. Whiskey & Leather (7884) has sold clothing, shoes and home goods for men and women since 2013, and Rangoni Firenze Shoes (7870) specializes in handcrafted shoes from Florence. Further south, Laura Gambucci (7655, Unit A) sells designer fashion and handbags plus jewelry designed with New York jeweler Erickson Beamon, and Gracie & Company (7458), open for more than 30 years, is known for sweaters and knits, easy pants and one-off jewelry. The 7800 block also has the activewear: lululemon (7835) and Vuori (7841) sit next door to each other, and Vissla Surf Shop (7851) sells the surf brand's own apparel for adults and kids.
Galleries, Watches and Prospect Street
Girard has two galleries. Quint Gallery (7722) shows contemporary sculpture, painting, photography, ceramics and installation, with a history of California Light & Space and Minimalist shows. Joseph Bellows Gallery (7661) shows vintage and contemporary photography, with a focus on American work from the 1970s. On Prospect St, Lik La Jolla (1205, Suite C) shows Peter Lik's large-format landscape photography, including Coastal Dreams, a sunset shot of Scripps Pier.
CJ Charles Jewelers sells new Cartier, Omega, IWC, Panerai and Breitling watches, pre-owned Rolex with its own warranty, and estate pieces, and it has a watch repair center. We Olive & Wine Bar (1158) sells California olive oils and vinegars with free tastings every day, plus a wine bar pouring small-production California wines; its kitchen stops taking orders an hour before closing. At 1298 Prospect St, Simple La Jolla (Unit 1B) mixes European collections with handmade American pieces, and Alpaca Collections (Suite 1N) sells clothing made mostly from natural fibers such as alpaca. The Shop La Jolla (1264) has trend-driven clothing with rotating art on the walls, Havaianas (1049) stocks the Brazilian brand's flip-flops, and Blue Apparel (1237, Unit M) is a quick stop for La Jolla hats and sweatshirts. A block off Girard, Adelaide's, a florist founded in 1936, fills 6,500 square feet with arrangements, candles, and home and garden gifts.
Eating Between Shops
La Plaza La Jolla has two restaurants upstairs: Lucien (Ste 308), which holds One MICHELIN Star (2026) for its tasting menu of California produce and seafood, and Catania (Ste 301), a top-floor Italian with a coastline-view terrace and wood-fired Neapolitan pizza. George's at the Cove sits across from the cove with a rooftop Ocean Terrace, and Nine-Ten is the beach-casual dining room in the Grande Colonial.
When to Go
Most shops open around 10am and close between 5pm and 7pm. Warwick's is open Mon–Sat 9am–6pm and Sun 10am–5:30pm, and Sigi's closes at 5pm daily. Quint Gallery is open Tue–Sat 11am–5pm, and Joseph Bellows only Tue, Wed and Fri 10am–5pm, other days by appointment. For an evening stop, Lik La Jolla is open until 7pm Sun–Thu and 8pm Fri–Sat, and We Olive until 8pm Sun–Thu and 9pm Fri–Sat. Many of the boutiques don't post hours, so call ahead. Street parking fills quickly, so park once in a paid garage such as 888 Prospect St or the lot at 870 Prospect St and walk.
