Insider guide

Shopping Liberty Station.

The story

Liberty Station is the former Naval Training Center in Point Loma, with galleries, studios and small shops in restored barracks on Historic Decatur Rd, Dewey Rd, Roosevelt Rd, Sims Rd and Perry Rd, plus a retail strip on Truxtun Rd. Liberty Public Market is the hub. Parking is free in surface lots reached from Laning Rd, Truxtun Rd and Historic Decatur Rd, so it is an easy place to spend a long afternoon.

Liberty Public Market

The market is a food hall in a former Navy chow hall, open daily 9am–8pm, with vendor hours that vary. Most of it is food, but several stalls sell things to take home. Mo Records (Booth 38) sells vinyl Thursday to Sunday, Baker & Olive (Booth 33) has artisan cheeses, charcuterie, aged balsamic and olive oils, Pasta Design (Booth 28) makes fresh pasta and sauces to cook at home, and The Candy Passport (Booth 34) imports sweets and snacks from around the world. Nobelrags (Booth 7) sells clothing and accessories.

Bottlecraft inside the market stocks about 500 bottles of local, domestic and international craft beer to go and pours 24 rotating drafts in its tasting room, open until 9:30pm on Friday and Saturday. Next door, Point Loma Tea sells whole-leaf teas, teaware and gifts, with a tea bar for flights and tastings.

Shops and Studios in the Arts District

Moniker General combines home goods and custom furniture with a coffee-and-toast bar and a cocktail, wine and beer bar, and opens at 7am. Pigment, the Point Loma branch of the North Park shop, sells design-minded gifts, plants and furniture. Sea Hive Station gathers handmade, artisan and vintage goods from more than 150 San Diego brands, and Apricot Yarn & Supply sells natural-fiber yarns and runs knitting and crochet classes.

The upstairs suites of the barracks hold studios. Thatch sells its own contemporary jewelry, handmade in Southern California, and Catalina Design Studio (Suite 203) sells handmade bags, pillows, ceramics and renewed furniture. Verre Designs Glass Art makes custom stained and fused glass, and Gilmore Family Jewelers does custom rings and necklaces. On Truxtun Rd, Point Loma Fine Jewelers (2445, Suite 108) is a family-owned jeweler for engagement rings and wedding bands. With kids, The Hot Spot is a drop-in pottery-painting and candle-making studio with no studio fee.

For art, Gallery 201 is run by Arts District Liberty Station with shows that rotate through the year, Visions Museum of Textile Art presents about 15 exhibitions a year of contemporary quilt and textile art, and Mi Gallery Tu Gallery is an oil painter's gallery that also teaches workshops.

Eating and Timing

The market itself is the easy lunch. For a sit-down meal, Solare serves house-made pasta and wood-fired pizza steps from the market and is MICHELIN Recommended (2026).

Most shops open 10–11am and close 5–8pm. Point Loma Tea is closed Monday, Apricot Yarn stays open to 8pm on the first Friday of each month, and Gallery 201 is open daily 8am–8pm. Several studios keep short hours: Mi Gallery Tu Gallery is open Mon–Fri 10am–4pm, Visions Wed–Sat only, Catalina Design Studio only 4pm–7pm on Fridays, and Gilmore Family Jewelers and Verre Designs work by appointment. Thatch doesn't post hours, so call ahead. Thursday to Saturday is the best window to catch Mo Records, Visions and the studios open at once.
