Insider guide
Shopping Gaslamp.
The story
The Gaslamp Quarter's shops sit along Fifth Ave from Broadway to Harbor Dr, with a few more on Fourth and Sixth Aves. The district is better known for restaurants and nightlife than shopping, so treat it as galleries, gifts and a few independent boutiques between meals. Most of the shops are on Fifth Ave itself, so it is an easy walk up one street.
Galleries
Galleries lead. Exclusive Collections, founded in the 1990s, represents The Art of Dr. Seuss, McKenzie Thorpe, Michael Flohr and Tom Everhart, and it stays open into the evening on weekends. Sparks Gallery is a contemporary gallery and event space in the historic Sterling Hardware Building, showing San Diego and Southern California artists with opening-night parties for each new show. The Art of Tim Cantor is devoted to the surrealist painter, with original paintings and limited-edition reproductions.
Boutiques, Jewelry and Home
Native Star, in the Yuma Building, is owned by Native American founder Ruth-Ann Thorn and sells Indigenous-made fashion, fine jewelry, beauty and gourmet foods, with a coffee bar inside. San Diego Trading Company, founded in 1995 in Horton Plaza, sells its own original garments and San Diego products, and Sole Concepts stocks comfort shoes from Birkenstock and Blundstone for city walking.
The 363 Fifth Ave building holds three shops in one stop: Agora Galleries for antiques, French-style furniture and fine jewelry, Find Your Feet for novelty socks, and The Wine Bank for bottles from around the world and weekly tastings. Yurdan Home Decor sells one-of-a-kind hand-painted and hand-blown glass table lamps made by Turkish artisans, and Urban Lighting is a showroom for contemporary lighting, ceiling fans and modern furniture.
For jewelry, BIJUT Collection, in the historic Pioneer Warehouse, welds custom-fit permanent chains in 14k gold-filled, sterling silver or solid gold, and Chappellet & Co is a custom jewelry design studio near Broadway. Eyes on Fifth, at the Harbor Dr end, has an on-site lens lab working with Zeiss, Shamir and Hoya. Practical stops include Kahoots Pet for dog and cat supplies, IT'SUGAR for candy, and Cuban Cigar Factory, a cigar shop and lounge.
Eating Between Shops
Grant Grill in the US Grant is an art deco dining room that has served since 1951, known for mock turtle soup and dry-aged steaks. Lionfish serves coastal seafood on two floors of the Pendry, and Saint James French Diner in the Palihotel is a casual option with burgers, mussels and a patio. A few blocks east in East Village, Callie and LOLA 55 both hold a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand (2026).
When to Go
Few shops post hours, so call ahead for most. BIJUT is open Tue–Sun 9am–8pm, and Kahoots Mon–Thu 10am–6pm, Fri 11am–6pm and Sat–Sun 10am–6pm. Exclusive Collections runs Mon–Thu 11am–7pm and Fri–Sun 1pm–9pm, which makes it an after-dinner stop. Weekends are the best time to come: the Gaslamp Artisan Market, run by Community Crops with the Gaslamp Quarter Association, sets up at Fifth Ave and Island Ave Sat–Sun 10am–4pm with handmade clothing, accessories, art, pet goods and wellness items.
The Gaslamp Quarter Association lists four garages: Park it on Market, 6th & K Parkade (289 6th Ave), Gaslamp City Square and the Horton Plaza Garage. The Green and Silver Line trolleys stop at Fifth Ave and L St, across from the Convention Center, near the south end of the strip.
